Persistence of Expectation

The dark quietness numbs my ears
as you knock patiently in my head
A stranger I know, thirsty
calling me out by name
I refuse to listen.
No-
I beg my little angels and demons
to forbid me from listening
and hide me in silence instead
But you keep knocking
as one would offer a prince
his best drink
Until,
with ease
and without little hands and tails
on wings that hold me,
I come out
and open the door for you,
a prince with a glass of tears.
